Texas Commissioned Security Officer Level III – Blended Course Description

The Texas Commissioned Security Officer Level III Course (Blended) provides state-approved training for individuals seeking to work as armed security officers in Texas. This course combines online learning and in-person instruction, ensuring flexibility while covering the legal, practical, and tactical aspects of commissioned (armed) security duties.

Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of firearm safety, security laws, use of force guidelines, report writing, and emergency response procedures. The blended model allows students to complete theory and lecture portions online, followed by required hands-on training and firearms qualification in person.


Course Highlights:

  • Blended Training: Online classroom instruction (state-approved content) plus in-person skills and firearms range qualification.

  • Texas Occupations Code / Administrative Rules: Coverage of Chapter 1702 (Private Security Act) and DPS Regulatory guidelines.

  • Firearms Training: Safe handling, fundamentals of marksmanship, and range proficiency qualification with handgun.

  • Use of Force & Conflict Management: Situational awareness, de-escalation techniques, and Texas laws on self-defense and defense of others.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Must hold or be eligible for a Texas Level II (Non-Commissioned) Security Officer Certificate.

  • Must have a valid Texas Driver’s License or State ID.

  • Students must provide a duty handgun (.38 caliber or 9mm minimum), 50 rounds of ammunition, and required safety gear (eye and ear protection).

  • Background check and fingerprinting will be required for state licensing (handled through DPS/RSD).


Certification:

Upon successful completion of the blended course (online portion, in-person classroom, and firearms qualification), students will receive a Certificate of Completion (Form PSB-30). This certificate is required to apply with the Texas Department of Public Safety – Regulatory Services Division (DPS/RSD) for a Commissioned Security Officer License (Level III).
