Texas Level II Non-Commissioned Officer Training
The online course delivers Texas Private Security Program approved curriculum for non-commissioned security officers including:
- Roles and responsibilities of security officers
- Legal aspects of security work
- Security communications
- Response to emergencies and safety hazards
Course Description:
This Level II training course meets the minimum standards established by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) for non-commissioned (unarmed) security officers. It provides foundational instruction required for individuals seeking registration and licensure as a non-commissioned security officer in Texas.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe the basic roles, responsibilities, and limitations of a non-commissioned security officer in accordance with Texas law.
- Identify and apply relevant sections of the Texas Occupations Code, Texas Administrative Code, and other governing laws affecting private security.
- Recognize proper conduct and ethical standards expected of licensed security personnel.
- Communicate effectively and professionally to prevent, manage, and de-escalate conflicts in the field.
- Understand the Use of Force Continuum and recognize appropriate responses to various security-related incidents.
- Determine when an arrest or detention by a security officer is lawful, and act in accordance with state guidelines.
- Reference relevant portions of the Texas Penal Code as it relates to security work, use of force, and protection of persons and property.
- Demonstrate proficiency in verbal and written communication, including the proper documentation of incidents and reports.
- Understand the role of security officers during emergencies, evacuations, and hazardous incidents.
This course is a prerequisite for those applying for registration as a non-commissioned security officer in Texas and must be completed prior to employment in a regulated security role.
Completion Requirements
- The mandatory completion/duration period for this course is 15 days from the registration date.
- Participants will have three attempts to pass the final examination.
Attendance Requirements
To meet attendance requirements, participants must review each training module and complete all required course assignments, activities, quizzes, and/or end of course exam.

- Please allow 24 business hours for your PSP-36 certificate to be emailed to you. The one you see on your student portal upon course completion is not the official PSP-36 certificate.
- Successful completion of this course provides certification that you have met the classroom/online training requirements for application to the TOPS database as an “Unarmed Registration – Non-Commissioned Security Officer.”
Texas Level III -Commissioned Security Officer Training
This state-required 45-hour course, mandated by the Texas Department of Public Safety – Private Security Program, is designed for individuals seeking licensure as Commissioned (Armed) Security Officers in Texas. As of October 1, 2017, the course includes 35 hours of non-firearm instruction and 10 hours of firearms training. While commonly referred to as “the gun class,” this comprehensive program delivers essential instruction that extends far beyond firearms.
At our training academy, we believe the Level III curriculum should serve as the minimum standard for all serious security professionals, whether armed or unarmed, due to the depth and quality of content provided.
This course includes state-approved training on:
- Professional verbal and written communication techniques
- Incident scene management and securing procedures
- Situational awareness and threat recognition
- Legal and appropriate Use of Force, including the Use of Force Continuum
- Conflict resolution and de-escalation strategies
- Introduction to defensive tactics and subject control
- Proper use of handcuffs and restraints
- Field note-taking and effective report writing
- Firearms safety, marksmanship fundamentals, and live-fire qualification (10 hours)
The online portion of this course is approved by the Texas Private Security Program and is designed to prepare commissioned officers to meet state licensing standards.
Practical firearm training and qualification will be completed in person, as required by DPS regulations.
Note: Policies and procedures taught in this course may be further defined or modified by your employer’s internal protocols and post orders.
Participant Must Provide
A photo identification on the first day of class.
Physical Requirements
Physical participation is required, participant must be in good physical condition and able to complete the following:
- Handcuffing techniques
- Defensive counter strikes
- Intermediate weapons techniques
- Firearms techniques
Participants must pass the Texas License to Carry Handgun Proficiency Demonstration Course of Fire on the first day of class. No refunds for any candidate dismissed for failure to meet the minimum firearms qualification.
Course Description:

It provides foundational instruction required for individuals seeking registration and licensure as a commissioned security officer in Texas.
Upon successful completion of the Level III Commissioned Security Officer course, participants will be able to:
- Recognize the statutes, Penal Code provisions, and administrative rules relevant to commissioned security officers, as required by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
- Identify key elements of effective verbal and written communication, including field reporting and documentation practices.
- Explain the duties and responsibilities of a commissioned security officer when responding to an incident scene, including coordination and securing procedures.
- Understand and apply situational awareness to enhance safety, decision-making, and threat identification in various environments.
- Recognize and appropriately apply the Use of Force Continuum, ensuring actions are reasonable, justified, and compliant with state law.
- Demonstrate techniques to resolve conflicts using de-escalation strategies and professional communication.
- Recognize the fundamentals of defensive tactics, including positioning, movement, and subject control basics.
- Describe the appropriate situations for handcuffing, along with proper procedures and safety considerations for restraint application.
- Identify different types of intermediate weapons (e.g., batons, OC spray), and explain their lawful and appropriate use.
- Demonstrate the ability to safely handle, clean, maintain, and store firearms in accordance with Texas DPS requirements and industry best practices.

- You must register and attend the face-to-face portion of the blended offering within six (2) months of the completion date of the course. If you do not complete the requirements within the stated window, you will need to repeat this online course.
- Passing a Federal Criminal History Background Check is required for admittance into Private Security Level III Practical Applications.
- The TEEX Private Security Level III blended course offering does not include the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) for licensing purposes per 1702.163. The DPS candidate must seek the MMPI separate from their course completion.
- Successful completion of this course provides certification that you have met the classroom/online training requirements for application to the TOPS database as an “Armed Registration – Commissioned Security Officer.” DPS requires the MMPI and Federal Criminal History Background Check to complete the application process.
