Texas License to Carry (LTC) Course Description

The Texas License to Carry (LTC) Course is designed to provide individuals with the knowledge, skills, and legal understanding required to responsibly carry a handgun in the State of Texas. This state-approved training covers firearm safety, laws governing the use of force, non-violent dispute resolution, and proper storage practices to reduce accidents.

Course Highlights:

  • Classroom instruction (4–6 hours) covering Texas Penal Code and Government Code related to weapons, self-defense, and carry laws.

  • Firearm safety and handgun use fundamentals.

  • Situational awareness and conflict avoidance.

  • Range qualification with a licensed LTC instructor.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years old (or 18 if active-duty military).

    • Notice : In Texas, the minimum age to carry a handgun without a license is 21, but a federal court ruling in late 2022 stated that the state cannot prosecute 18-to-20-year-olds under this age restriction alone, allowing them to carry a handgun without a license. The age requirement to obtain a Texas License to Carry (LTC) is generally 21, but a federal court ruling also allows 18-to-20-year-olds to apply for an LTC. Since the court ruling, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will no longer deny an LTC application solely based on the applicant’s age being between 18 and 20.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License or State ID.

  • Students must bring their own handgun (.22 caliber or higher) and 50 rounds of ammunition (unless otherwise provided by arrangement).

Certification:
Upon successful completion of the classroom portion and the shooting proficiency test at the range, students will receive a certificate of training (Form LTC-100), which is required to apply for a Texas License to Carry with the Department of Public Safety (DPS).
